ECSTATIC DANCES

Tuesdays & Thursdays 8:00 to 11:00pm

At OmCulture you can feel free to find your personal exploration of ecstatic movement as well as connect with community through dance in a deep and satisfying way. Each week DJs right from our ecstatic dance community hold space and provide music for a deep dive into ecstasy. We open and close each dance with a short seated circle and end with snacks and social time!

CODE OF CONDUCT

Inclusivity

OmCulture is committed to creating a safe and inclusive space for all people to experience the joy of ecstatic dance. We welcome people of all ages, genders, sexual orientations, races, ethnicities, religions, abilities, and body types. We believe that everyone has the right to express themselves freely and to feel safe and respected.

We will not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, or violence at our events. If you experience any form of discrimination, harassment, or violence, please report it to a staff member immediately.

We are committed to creating a space where everyone can feel welcome and safe. Thank you for being a part of our community.

Consent

At all dances consent is a requirement before dancing with another person. Consent can be verbal or non-verbal, but it must be clear and enthusiastic. If you are unsure whether someone has given consent, err on the side of caution and do not dance with them.

You have the right to say no to any touch or contact, and you can withdraw your consent at any time. If you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, please let a staff member know immediately.

Thank you for respecting the boundaries of others and for helping us create a safe and inclusive space for everyone to enjoy ecstatic dance.

Agreements

In order to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone, we ask that you agree to the following:

  • Do not wear street shoes on the dance floor. Bare feet or socks are encouraged, however if you prefer to wear shoes, please wear clean, soft-soled shoes that will not damage the floor.

  • Avoid having conversations on the dance floor (except for important consent conversations). The dance floor is a space for movement and expression, and conversations can be disruptive. If you need to talk to someone, please step off the dance floor.

  • Avoid wearing strong scents. Strong scents can be disruptive to others, and they can also trigger allergies.

FAQ

Q: What is ecstatic dance?

A: Ecstatic dance is a free-form way to express yourself, to connect with your body and your emotions, and to experience the power of movement. Ecstatic dance is a tool for healing, transformation, and personal growth.

Q: What should I wear to ecstatic dance?

A: Dancers tend to wear clothes that make them feel comfortable and allow them to move freely, like loose-fitting clothing or yoga pants. You’re also encouraged to wear fun or expressive clothing if that makes you warm and fuzzy inside.

Q: What type of music is played at ecstatic dance?

A: Ecstatic dance music is a vast and eclectic mix of genres, from electronica to world music to live instrumentals. The music is designed to create a space for dancers to express themselves freely and to connect with their bodies and their emotions.

Q: Are there any steps in ecstatic dancing?

A: Ecstatic dance is a free-form dance, which means that there are no set steps or patterns. Dancers are free to move their bodies however they feel comfortable and expressive. This can include swaying, spinning, jumping, shaking, or anything else that feels good.

Q: How do I approach dancing with others?

A: When approaching someone to dance, it's important to be mindful and considerate. Here are some tips:

  • Don't approach someone from behind. Instead, make eye contact and smile to see if they are interested in dancing.

  • Get consent. If you want to share weight or lift someone, ask for their permission.

  • End the dance when you're ready. You don't have to wait until the end of the song.

  • Don't make assumptions. Everyone is different, so it's important to ask for consent each time you want to dance with someone.

Q: If people are dancing in a group, can I join them?

A: Yes, you can join a group of people who are dancing, but it is important to get their consent first. You can do this by simply asking, "Can I join you?" or by making eye contact and smiling. If the group is welcoming, they will likely say yes. However, if they seem hesitant or uncomfortable, it is best to respect their space and find another group to dance with.
